If your buildings keep getting smoked, you’re out of shields. Here’s how to get shields in Monopoly GO, how to keep them stocked, and how to unlock the different and new shield skins people show off on their boards.
“Shields” means two different things in this game, and most guides mix them up:
Shields you use. The defensive item that blocks a Shutdown. This is what you need to protect your board.
Shield skins. Cosmetic designs. They look different but block exactly one hit, the same as any shield.

How to get shields in Monopoly GO: the quick answer
Land on shield tiles. They show up as glowing pickups on Property, Utility and Tax tiles. This is your main source.
Keep rolling on a schedule. A new shield spawns on a different tile every time you pick one up.
Do Quick Wins daily. Some rewards include shields, and the weekly bar unlocks a skin.
Level up Net Worth. It raises how many shields you can hold, from 3 up to 5 (levels below).
Use multipliers carefully. Extra shields over your cap turn into free dice.
For skins: play tournaments, Peg-E, Treasures and partner events, finish sticker sets, and claim free links.
You can’t buy standard shields with real money in this game. If a site says it sells them, walk away.
What a shield actually does
A Shutdown happens when someone lands on a Railroad and the game picks the demolition mini game. If your building is unprotected, it gets damaged. You pay to rebuild it, which means you pay for the same upgrade twice.
A shield fires on its own when the hit comes in. It does three things:
Your building takes no damage.
You skip the rebuild cost.
The attacker’s cash reward is cut by half, and they score fewer tournament points.
Attackers go looking for boards with no shields. That’s why an empty shield bar costs you more than the shield tile ever will.
Step 1: Pick shields up from the board
Shields sit on random Property Tiles, including color sets, Utilities and Taxes. Land on one and it goes into your inventory right away. The game then drops a replacement on a different tile, so the board never runs out.
Before you roll hard, look at where the glowing pickups sit relative to your token. If one is a few spaces away, roll on a low multiplier and let it come to you.
Step 2: Use the daily sources
These don’t give you piles of shields. They keep you rolling so you can reach the tiles.
Quick Wins. Three daily tasks, like rolling doubles, upgrading a landmark or landing on Chance. Rewards can include a standard shield. The source says they reset at 8:00 AM Eastern, but check your own timer.
Free shop gift. Scroll right on the top banner of the shop. It refreshes about every 8 hours and gives dice and small cash.
Daily Treats. Log in once a day for the calendar rewards.
Free dice links. Official links add dice (the source says 25 to 75 dice a few times a week). Open them on the phone that has the game installed, not on a desktop.
Step 3: Know your shield cap
You start with 3 shields. Net Worth upgrades raise the limit. These levels come from the source guide and could change, so confirm them in your game.
Net Worth level
What you get
3
Shields unlock, capacity 3
125
One more shield, capacity 4
160
Another shield system upgrade
1,800
Final shield, capacity 5 (the source text is garbled here, so confirm it)
3,000
Bigger cash payout when you break an opponent’s shield
Five is the cap. Nothing above that adds more room, even past level 20,000.
Step 4: Farm shields with multipliers, without wasting dice
The multiplier works on shields too. Land on a shield tile with an x5 and you try to collect 5 shields.
Your cap is the problem. Extra shields over the cap convert into free dice at 1 for 1. Example: you have 0 shields, a cap of 5, and you land on a shield with an x10. Five go into your inventory and five come back as dice.
What this means in practice:
A shield tile is a safe landing for a big roll. If you were aiming for a Railroad and hit a shield, you get most of your dice back.
Don’t crank the multiplier to hunt shields. You only need to fill a few slots.
Use the 6, 7, 8 rule. Two dice make 6, 7 or 8 about 44% of the time. Roll at x1 on empty stretches. When a Railroad or shield tile is 6, 7 or 8 spaces away, push the multiplier up.
Standard multiplier caps by dice pool:

Limited time High Roller events can raise this cap.
What if I just don’t want shields? The empty board play
Some late game players build nothing and hoard cash until a big event, so there’s nothing to Shutdown. It works against Shutdowns. It does not work against Bank Heists, and there’s no shield for those. It also stalls your Net Worth. The source says most experienced players think Heist losses hurt less than paying for destroyed buildings twice, but that’s a judgment call, not a rule. If you’re a newer player, skip this and keep your shields full.
How to get different and new shield skins
Skins are cosmetic only. Scopely added them on September 18, 2023. You can’t buy them. You earn them.
Where to see yours. Tap the three line menu in the top right, open My Showroom, and go to the middle tab with the shield icon.
You can also tap the little cluster of shield icons on the board. Filling a shelf in the Showroom gives one time dice and cash.
Where new skins come from:

Examples
Starter
The Defender (red wooden shield, everyone has it)
Quick Wins weekly bar
Mr. M Vintage (finish all 7 days)
Leaderboard tournaments
Armor Up, Celtic Knot, Disco Ball, Ghost, Peg-E, Rudolph, Santa, Snowman and more. Each is tied to one tournament. You usually need a top finish.
Treasures events
Scorpion, Jungle Tablet, Space Capsule and others. Each needs a set level in that event.
Prize Drop (Peg-E)
Shield skins sit deep in the reward track. The source says some need 5,750 points or more.
Partner events
Grand prizes have included shield skins.
Sticker album sets
Merry Spruce, Water Works, Vintage Turntable. Prestige sets give gold versions.
Free links and promos
Fry Guard (McDonald’s), Daffy Duck (Looney Tunes)
A skin tied to a past event is gone until the developer brings it back. Don’t pay anyone for one.
The free ones are worth chasing first. Promo skins come through official links. In October 2026, the McDonald’s Fry Guard shield was free through a Scopely link with a claim deadline of January 8, 2027.
How to claim a skin link
Open the link on the phone or tablet that has Monopoly GO installed. Desktop won’t work.
Allow your phone to open it in the Monopoly GO app.
Wait for the in game pop up that says it was added.
Open the Showroom or tap the shield cluster, find the skin, and hit Equip.
If it says “already claimed” and you haven’t claimed it, update the app, open it once, then try the link again. If that fails, see the last section below.
Pick your target: how to score tournament skins
Tournament skins usually need a top finish, so your shields matter on offence too. Base points in a tournament are:
Railroad result
Base points
Shutdown blocked by a shield
2
Shutdown that lands
4
Small Bank Heist
4
Large Bank Heist
6
Bankrupt
8
Mega Heist (during that event)
12
These are multiplied by your dice multiplier. At x100, a blocked Shutdown gives 200 points and a Mega Heist gives 1,200. That gap is the reason players hit “Switch Opponent” and pick targets with no shields (visible by the smoke over their buildings). It works, and it can cost you friends. Your call.
When shields or skins go missing
Desync bugs happen. If you’re missing a shield, a skin, or a refund:
Open Settings, then Customer Service in the game.
If it sends you to an FAQ page, use the in app chat instead and keep going until you reach a person.
Attach a screen recording and your User ID. The source says tickets without evidence can take up to a week.
Players also reported silent changes to dice capacity and regeneration on some accounts. Shield capacity stayed at 5. Treat that as a community report, not something Scopely has confirmed.
Common mistakes
Letting your shield bar sit empty before a tournament.
Raising the multiplier just to hunt shields.
Claiming reward links on a desktop.
Paying a third party for shields or old skins.
Trusting a link that isn’t posted by Scopely or Monopoly GO.
